Update on School Waiver

As mentioned in our most recent community updates, Upland Unified School District (UUSD) requested and has been granted a waiver by the California Department of Public Health allowing us to reopen our elementary schools. We wanted to update you on our plans, while emphasizing - first and foremost - that the safety and well-being of our students and staff has been and remains our number one priority.

As part of the waiver process, UUSD will reopen our elementary schools in phases beginning with TK through 3rd grade students at Valencia and Sierra Vista Elementary Schools whose families selected our blended or traditional model. These students will begin receiving instruction in person on Monday, November 30.

Please note that in-person instruction will require safety modifications including one-way entry and exit procedures, requirement of masks, physical distancing, limited social interaction, elimination of recess and serving meals on campus, and daily health screenings.

School Waiver Granted

An important message from Superintendent Lynn Carmen Day

This week, UUSD received an official Elementary Education Determination Letter approving our request for a waiver from the state’s ban on in-classroom instruction. This approval is based on Upland’s low daily case rate, which is less than half of the county’s rate, and well below the required threshold.

As superintendent, I want to be clear that we are not hastily reopening schools. Safety is our first and highest priority, and prior to moving forward, all appropriate safety measures will be in place. As a first step, our plan remains to pilot a small-group in-person cohort at each elementary school site. From there, we will increase the number of cohorts we bring back on campus until we reach the need or the maximum capacity of 25% of enrolled students on each campus. Our first priority is to offer in-person support to students based on needs.
