Freshmen Success Initiative
“Freshmen Success Initiative:  Success For All”


Creating Freshmen Success, a task force report presented to the Governing Board and the Upland High School Faculty Senate, identified the need and outlined the key elements of a new initiative to support in-coming ninth grade students for a successful start in high school.  The Freshmen Success Initiative (FSI) begins in 2007 at Upland High School for all entering freshmen.  Ninth grade students will be taught by a common core of teachers in English, mathematics, science or social studies within one of nine Scottish houses.  Teachers in each house identify key instructional strategies that their students will learn across the curriculum and provide:

Initiative Goals 

  • Pass All Classes with a C or Better
  • Implement Common Formative Assessments
  • Provide Differentiated Instruction
  • Provide Interventions to Support Achievement
  • Prepare Students for Advanced Coursework in Grades 10-12
  • Increase Extracurricular Participation
  • Provide Common Planning Time for Teachers
  • Increase Positive Parent and Student Perceptions
